| Weather Conditions in the Area
The country we shall be exploring is a beautiful wilderness,
but unpredictable, the weather can change from being calm and sunny,
to gale force winds with heavy snow in an instant. Exciting and challenging!

For this reason, we have engaged guides who understand and respect the
weather conditions in the area. It is they who have the final decision
as to whether a tour proceeds or not. The skiing season begins, as early
as October, and by November or December there should be around 60 to
70 cm of snow. Perfect for snow boarding, telemark or cross country
skiing. The dark period creeps in about the middle of October, with
fantastic twilight midday from December onwards; otherwise it is fairly
dark for approximately 100 days. It is a time we find attractive, with
a special arctic light, and a calm across the landscape. The northern
lights, often dancing across the sky, give an eerie atmosphere for people
travelling in the mountains, it is wonderfully scary thinking you could
almost touch them. The sun returns officially on the 7th of February
in Langfjordbotn. The dark time is great for skiing, and a challenge
to ski down a mountain slope by the light of a torch on your hat. But
the best time is perhaps from the beginning of February when the sun
shines once again on the mountaintops; the season should last until
the middle of June.

The majority of glacier climbs are undertaken during
winter with the aid of a “skifeller” [a covering for the
ski base which restricts slipping on steep slopes] and the decent, on
a snowboard if you wish, all the way to the shoreline Exploration on
the ice cap is from the beginning of July, the glacier can be a formidable
place, and a sunny day can be transformed suddenly by low cloud or mist.
From Finnmarks highest point [1204 metres o.s.l.] you can experience
a terrific view above the sea mist. Loppa can offer some of the best
views of the midnight sun, between the 12th of May until the 29th of
July it remains above the horizon, until it disappears again at the
of October and the arctic dark time returns.
Experience all this with your hosts at Bre og Vandring.
